Living in near poverty with her alcoholic father Gorrion, independent 18-year-old Lena's only hope for escape is a grant to study in Portugal. But when she misses her chance to apply, Lena winds up working for a group of local drug-smuggers. Still desperate to escape her town, Lena develops a relationship with one of the gangsters, Milio, and together the couple flee for Portugal in search of a better life.
