Nemo is an old American who has been living in Lisbon for the past 20 years. He's travelling in France and wants Millar to assure his personal safety. His life is in danger: a few days earlier someone tried to bump him off. Millar hasn't acted as anyone's personal bodyguard for a very long time and isn't about to start again. But when a personal connection to the situation beomes apparent, he is prompted to take the case.
