In 1993 Algiers, as civil war looms on the horizon, former freedom fighter Madame Osmane runs her apartment building with an iron fist. Determined to be respected despite the absence of a man of the house, Madame Osmane imposes her tyranical will on her daughter Sakina, maid Meriem and the other women who live in her building. But Madame Osmane's characteristic ferociousness will eventually lead to tragic consequences.
