The year was 1936. Spain was still, in effect, a feudal society. Wealthy landowners, joined by churchmen, industrialists, and army officers, feared the growing power of the working class and began to organize to retain their power and privilege. On July 18, 1936, the military, led by Fascist General Franco, rose up to stop the small steps to democracy that had been achieved. Thus began the Spanish Civil War. In England, an unemployed young man named David leaves Liverpool to join an international division of the Republican Militia in the fight against Fascism in Spain. Together with freedom fighters from Spain, England, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany and the United States, he experiences the spoils of love and the passions of war. In the struggle for land and freedom, death is not a sacrifice, it's an honor. And when passion seizes the hearts and minds of those who believe deeply in a cause, one simple truth emerges... There is nothing worth living for that isn't worth dying for.
