Crippled by poverty, single mother Francoise Barnier works hard at her cleaning job to support herself and her two daughters. Unwilling to go on welfare, every day is a struggle to feed her family and survive. While at the supermarket one day, overwhelmed by the wealth of products she cannot afford, Francoise steals some packages of meat. Arrested for shoplifting, Francoise is acquitted by a sympathetic judge, but faces a retrial when the town causes an uproar over her 'lenient' treatment under the law.
