The disappearance of English photographer Peter Holm means someone else has to continue his annual assignment of snapping prescribed shots of the countryside for the Ministry of the Environment. Project manager Gaspard gives the job to Alice, an inexperienced technician, whose mom was Gaspard's old flame. While examining Holm's photos of a country house, Alice notices the same woman appearing in the background year after year. Intrigued, she rings the bell to the house and meets the photographer's mistress who is still trying to figure out why her lover disappeared. As their relationship grows, Alice discovers the artist, as opposed to the technician, in her own work.
