In 1920s Algeria, wealthy but impotent patriarch Brahim becomes angered when neither of his wives bear him a child. Deciding to take young Fadah as his third wife, Brahim separates her from her love Hemna. For awhile, Fadah fails to become pregnant, but when Hemna sneaks onto the estate, disguised as a beggar, Fadah finally bears a child. At first, Brahim is overjoyed to have an heir to his fortune. But soon, suspicions arise over the identity of the child's father.
