A tale about Victor Derval, an egotistical elder statesman of the 1930s Parisian stage who falls for Lisa Lanska, a young Hungarian waif who idolises him and later becomes his muse. Once she moves into his mansion, she charms his armchair revolutionary son. Tragedy awaits the trio and threatens to ruin the opening of Derval's new play, in which Lisa is about to make her acting debut.
