In 1944, recently orphaned sisters Penny and Baby go to live with their Uncle Wilhelm, a Jewish intellectual, and his wife Katchen, in their Tuscan villa. As World War II engulfs the country, Nazi soldiers take up residency in the villa, but Wilhelm refuses to abandon his home for the safety of Switzerland, placing the entire family at risk.
