Hancock: The Fans Strike Back!

Many of you didn't agree with our review of Will Smith's latest blockbuster. We're okay with that.

You can always tell when you're going to catch flack for a movie review. You can pan the new Indy Jones all you like because the people who will be upset aren't the types to comment. But knock Iron Man a bit and you're in for a tussle. Same goes with last weekend's box-office winner, Hancock. I gave the film a C, mostly because it's not very good. However many of you felt differently and went out of your way this weekend to email/comment/call me re: Hancock. So let's get into it!

This reviewer is crazy. He has obviously joined the "Bash Hancock" bandwagon.
- Citygrl

Hmm, must we go after my sanity based on my Hancock review alone? I would think my collection of shrunken heads would be far more troubling on that front. However, I am genuinely glad you liked the film. Without people paying money to see movies I don't get to see them anymore. So, if you think your $10 bucks was well spent then I'm pleased.

I will note that I didn't get on the bandwagon though. I hate most other movie reviewers, mostly because I'd rather everyone just read my stuff. Ideally, I'd be the only one around and my opinion would be the only one on posters, even if I hated the film. Wouldn't that be a great world? Can't you see the Spider-Man 3 posters being hung with the quote "egh, whatever" displayed prominently? That would be fun.

If they'd stayed on topic -- keeping with Hancock's shaky relationship with public opinion -- it would've been better.
- Zardox

I couldn't agree more. I didn't want to get into any plot points before the movie was released but the complete lack of focus was my main issue with this movie.

... makes you wonder who hires these people to judge movies. Is there a movie critic school that cranks out these chumps?
-GROGpimpin

No, there is not. And name-calling? Really? Sigh. Also, for the record, I don't consider myself a critic. I'm a fellow who goes to movies and then tells you my opinion. That's it. If you find we're often in agreement on films then maybe I can save you a few bucks.

You know what's troubling? The fact that people feel obligated to stand up for multi-billion dollar corporations while bashing people they perceive as "critical." This is utter nonsense. I live in a 650 sq. ft. apartment. My only goal is to entertain and I guarantee you my life is far more like yours than Will Smith's is. So why can't someone stand up and say, "This wasn't good?" Why can't we go after big-budget fare that comes off as a bloated and blatant money grab?

We can have different views on a film. That's OK. That's the good stuff, the marrow. This is what you do with your friends all the time. Why not bring that same pioneering spirit of debate to the Internet? I believe in you, Internet. Together we'll make something of ourselves.

Sorry to disagree with your assessment of Hancock. My sister and I just saw Hancock and, in spite of all the criticism, we both loved it. I don't care if it lacked complexity, sold out, or "could have been so much more." We didn't feel the need to analyze it. We thoroughly enjoyed it; just enjoyed it on a simple visceral level. I'd see it again and would certainly buy the DVD when it comes out.
- LuvTheMovies

You don't have to apologize for disagreeing. And I get where you're coming from. The film is entertaining. It's just not good. I think there's a difference. But as I put in my headline -- you'll probably like it anyway. Which is OK. No harm, no foul. Also, Hollywood is GRATEFUL you are planning on buying the DVD. That's where 71% of all studio profits come from.

Omg is this guy serious i just saw this movie yesterday and it was hella bomb they should actually make more movies like that there filled with action but also have a story behind it, i dont care what anyone says im a real person and tell it like it is and i strongly enjoyed watching hancock that evening.=)
- booradical

Was it hella bomb, though? Was it really? Also, to clear up any misunderstandings: I'm a real person too. I enjoy macaroni and cheese and I have three nieces. Could a computer make stuff like that up? I think not.

Oh shut up! If you want believability then go critique opera or something. Why is it that you idiots are always giving crappy reviews that normal people are all excited about?! No one wants a "real movie." If we wanted real we'd watch the news or CNN or something! Who died and made you God?
-kool kay

I hate the opera. Also, define "normal." But you bring up an interesting point, which is God's mortality. To the best of my knowledge God didn't die, and I wasn't made God at any point during the writing of my Hancock review. However, if this turns out to be false you'll know by the lighting bolt. Zing!

No, seriously here, I kid because I care. And I really don't want to cover the Opera for a living so let's find some common ground. The fact is, I never dinged the movie for not being "real" -- I dinged it for not being logical. I still don't think anyone would pick a fight with Hancock in prison. I mean, the guy is immune to bullets. Why would you mess with that? I wouldn't. I wouldn't say peep.

Until next time, remember that it takes an internet village. Let's all try and be good to each other, eh? (Final note: I swear that used to be Jerry Springer's sign-off which is pretty funny in retrospect.)
