In an alternate future, 1990s Japan is still embroiled in World War II, the conflict having raged for almost half a century. Decimated by daily bombings, the cities are rubble and the only skyscaper left standing is the Media Station, a TV production and broadcasting center which provides the country with its only source of escapism- entertainment. Working as a production assistant at the Media Station, Izawa lives alone in a poor neighborhood and contemplates suicide daily. His life begins to look a little less bleak, however, when he one day discovers his neighbor's wife, Sayo, hiding in his room. Sayo is also lonely and depressed and the two offer each other comfort in a world where daily bombings threaten that any day could be their last.
