One winter’s day, Jacob and Marie are abandoned in the woods by their unemployed father. In his pocket, Jacob finds a note from his mother directing them to Spain to search for their uncle. They battle their way out of the forest, through the city and, finally, to Spain. However, soon after, they discover that their uncle has died. Marie then meets and marries a rich surgeon, Diego, and the two siblings move into his isolated mansion. Jacob is against Marie and Diego’s relationship and jealously persists in trying to pull them apart, first pleading with Marie and then deliberately provoking Diego by starting an affair with his ailing sister, Sofia. Dire consequences loom for all involved.
