synopsis
A chronicle which details the human rights disaster that was the ethnic cleansing of Kurds in Turkey. The documentary features war zone footage and a close-up view of life for one Kurdish family trying to start over again in Santa Barbara, California. With a population of 25 million spilling over the borders of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and the former Soviet Union, the Kurds have maintained their way of life for more than 2000 years. However, in Turkey they are forbidden to speak their own language or to call their children by Kurdish names, while in nearby Iraq, the Kurds have been supported in their fight for identity by the United States. This division in the eyes of the international community into "good Kurds" and "bad Kurds" brings into focus what the film suggests is an inequity in American human rights policies.
