Set in 19th-century Portugal, two young men, Jose Augusto and Camilo become smitten with an English woman Fanny Owen, and both court extreme degradation and cruelty in pursuit of her. She consents to wed the dandyish Jose Augusto; however it was the pursuit of Fanny which most interested Augusto -- once she moves into his house, Fanny is totally ignored by her husband.
