When the grandmother who raised them from birth to age eight dies, twin sisters Helena and Irene, find themselves in an orphanage where they create a world of their own and a symbiotic attachment to one another. When the mother that abandoned them suddenly re-appears to take them with her into a life in the circus, the sisters' union is tested as one sister is touted as a great trapeze talent while the other is trained to be her servant.
