synopsis
Cool precision and venomous beauty entwine in the striking figure of Laure Ash, a woman who can only be expected to do the unexpected. A master of manipulation and guile, Laure plays a crucial role in a sultry jewel theft and then abruptly leaves her life of crime--and her bloodthirsty cohorts--behind her. In a surreal transformation, Laure refashions herself in the guise of a respectable married woman with a high profile political life and soon captures the attention of Nicolas, a soulful ex-paparazzo mesmerized by the elusive and enthralling adventuress. Attracted to the enigmatic Laure but serving an agenda of his own, Nicolas shatters her carefully crafted world with one shutter click of his seditious camera. Suddenly exposed to the world and vulnerable to her enemies, Laure is determined to use her considerable assets--and Nicolas' voyeuristic instincts--to reinvent her identitiy and once again escape her past. But as she ensnares Nicolas in her calculated seduction, Laure finds her quest for revenge complicated by their mutual attraction.

Banderas' schizophrenic performance is merely a symptom of Femme Fatale's fatal flaw: it's a derivative film that just can't decide what it wants to be. It tries to be a sexy tale of the twisted woman à la Basic Instinct, but Stamos just doesn't have enough mystique about her to pull that off (shedding her clothes at every possible moment doesn't help). If you like the idea of a Brian De Palma kinkfest involving star Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in black leather, not to mention a for-the-time-capsule lesbian make-out session with Rie Rasmussen, double the star rating for this movie. It's a jewel-heist something-or-other involving Antonio Banderas as a paparazzo stalking the thief, played by Romijn-Stamos in various states of undress. De Palma's plot is a muddle of murky Hitchcock, but his mastery with the camera -- deftly explored in two bonus… Continued

How's this for openers? Laure (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) corners Veronica (Rie Rasmussen) in a restroom at the Cannes Film Festival, slips off the gold, diamond-encrusted serpent thingie curled around Veronica's boobs and replaces it with a fake one without Veronica knowing. How? One hot, gratuitous lesbo love scene, that's how.

Writer-director Brian De Palma (Dressed to Kill, Body Double) is back playing teasing, erotic suspense games. OK, he's making less sense than usual. Romijn-Stamos, leggy… Continued
