‘Fast & Furious 6′ Tops Record Smashing Holiday Weekend

One of the strongest line-ups in recent box office history helped power the biggest Memorial Day weekend of all time, as “Fast & Furious 6″ led a pack of a half dozen blockbusters with an impressive $98.5 million debut.

They say that second place is the first loser, but honestly, there weren’t any losers this weekend, as proven by “The Hangover Part III,” which earned $42.4 million over the weekend. That is in addition to the $11.8 million it took in on Thursday, as the raunchy comedy cleverly opened a day early to beat the competition to the punch in an unusually crowded field.

But with crowds turning out in huge numbers across the board, there was plenty of good news for films all down the line. “Star Trek Into Darkness” held strong in its second week of release, earning $38 million, while the family friendly animated fantasy “Epic” came in fourth in its debut, earning a solid $34.2 million. And “Iron Man 3″ continues to rake in the dough as well, as Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster brought in another $19.4 million, pushing its domestic total to $367 million and its international take to an incredible $1.13 billion, good for fifth all time.

Even the sixth place film, “The Great Gatsby,” had plenty to cheer about, as the period drama earned another $13.7 million. Baz Luhrmann’s eye-popping adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel has now brought in $114 million in the U.S. alone.

Overall, grosses for the extended four day Memorial Day weekend are expected to approach $320 million, completely demolishing the previous record of $276 million set in 2011.
