In 1860 a young man is banished to an isolated island after stealing a few sheep. There he lives, fighting the demons of his past and the ghosts of his present, until the arrival of a young woman, who hears of his existence and longs to be with him. When the God-fearing citizens of the mainland learn of their life together and the impending birth of their child, they demand the two be married.
