synopsis
In March 1943, cryptoanalysts at Bletchley Park, Britian's top code-breaking center, are facing their worst nightmare: Nazi U-boats have unexpectedly changed the code by which they communicate with each other and German High Command. An Allied merchant shipping convoy with 10,000 passengers and vital supplies is in danger of attack. The authorities turn for help to Tom Jericho, a brilliant young mathematician and codebreaker, presently on sick leave. Unknown to colleagues, Jericho has another equally baffling enigma to unravel: Claire, the woman he loves, has disappeared just when the authorities suspect there may be a spy in Bletchley. To get to the bottom of both mysteries he enlists the help of Hester, Claire's best friend. Together they keep one step ahead of the secret services and investigate Claire's mysterious life, reaching a conclusion that uncovers international and personal betrayals.

This one came and went so fast earlier this year that you'd never guess it's a first-class World War II spy thriller about the British effort to break the Nazi Enigma code. Dougray Scott is the mathematician torn by his ethics and two babes (Kate Winslet and Saffron Burrows). With so many sharp minds behind this film -- screenwriter Tom Stoppard, director Michael Apted, producer Mick Jagger -- a commentary track would have helped. A brilliant, but troubled, World War II code breaker is called in to help an Allied convoy in danger by cracking a German code, and he also attempts to track down his ex-girlfriend, a suspected traitor, with help from her roommate. Story It's 1943, and the Allies are in a pinch. The largest convoy ever to cross the Atlantic has just left America, the Nazi U-boats patrolling the waters have changed their codes and the good guys may be headed straight for a trap if the Brits don't do something

Enigma, from Robert Harris' best-selling spy novel, is the first film from Mick Jagger's company, Jagged Films. From all reports, the rocker was more than a figurehead: He brought the novel to the attention of Tom Stoppard, the British playwright and Oscar-winning screenwriter (Shakespeare in Love), and shepherded the film (in conjunction with Broadway Video) through all stages. It's a striking debut. Jagger, born in 1943 - the year in which the film is set -- has an avid
