In 19th century Cantabria, upper-class daughter Adelaida meets and falls in love with fisherman Eusebio. But before they can marry, Eusebio is drafted to war and when news returns of his death, Adelaida is overwhlemed with grief and sent to a mental asylum. Once there, Adelaida realizes she has found a place where she can do some good in the world.
