Fast Five opened at an estimated $83.6m, doubling what had previously been the largest opening of 2011, Rio‘s $39.2m.
It’s also the largest opening ever for Universal Studios (not adjusted for inflation) and the largest opening by a film in the Fast and Furious franchise. Here’s the complete top five, courtesy of BoxOfficeMojo.
1. Fast Five $83,630,000
2. Rio $14,400,000
3. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family $10,050,000
4. Water for Elephants $9,125,000
5. Prom $5,000,000
The top earner per theater was Werner Herzog’s 3-D documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams (with $25,400 per), but with only five theaters it’s not likely you were able to catch that one this weekend. As for next weekend, it will likely be a race between Thor and Fast Five for the top slot.
