There were tons of great films to choose from this week on the tube, but it would be tough to beat the six picks below. We offer a complimentary (for basic cable subscribers) option to complement the impending release of “Rock of Ages,” plus as choice a Father’s Day watch as one can get. As always, be sure to verify with your local listings and cable or satellite providers.
‘Dressed to Kill’ (Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. on Cinemax)
Brian De Palma doesn’t hang around in the middle. He never makes a movie that is “just okay” — he makes great films or he makes awful ones. It’s really a crapshoot, so you may as well take advantage when one of his great films is on TV. This thriller, starring Michael Caine, Nancy Allen, Angie Dickinson and Dennis Franz remains one of his best love letters to Alfred Hitchcock.
‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ (Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. & 9:50 p.m. on Sundance)
It is highly recommended you do NOT watch this film with any family members whom with you’d feel uncomfortable watching threesomes. Barring that, enjoy Alfonso Cuaron’s sexually saturated coming-of-age roadie – one of the best films of the new millennium. At least so far. It’s pretty early.
‘West Side Story’ (Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. on TCM)
Getting primed for Tom Cruise and the rest of the “Rock of Ages” crew? There are few better ways to get into a musical mood than this classic reimagining of “Romeo and Juliet.” The story is generation-proven, and the music is catchy (almost to a fault). Warning: We will not be held responsible for any earworms moving forward.
‘Moneyball’ (Saturday at 6:40 p.m. on STARZ)
Baseball is used as an allegory for larger life lessons in Bennett Miller’s Oscar-nominated dramedy. It’s one of the best movies on any cable rotation right now. The Aaron Sorkin/Steven Zaillian screenplay is a star in and of itself, but it gets terrific support from Oscar nominees Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.
‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’ (Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on HBO)
This delightful romantic comedy — about a recently separated father who is given a makeover when a young womanizer shows an interest — works primarily because of the surprising chemistry between Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling.
‘Rio Bravo’ (Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on TCM)
If you miss the encore of “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” on Sunday, we can’t think of a better way to spend Father’s Day than kicking back and watching John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan stand around a jail cell and yap while baddies threaten to take back a prisoner. One of the best Westerns ever made.
