Best and Worst Oscars Fashion 2010
Maisy Fernandez March 7, 2010

Perhaps the celebrities at Sunday night’s Academy Awards were taking a cue from Oscar himself. After all, everyone wants to shine, right?
Metallics were one of the the biggest color trends of the night, alongside pastel pinks and off-whites. But no matter what hue was on display, nary a shoulder was covered with celebs favoring strapless or one-shoulder gowns.
And as always, some did fashion better than others.
Here are our picks for best and worst dressed.
CHEERS:
SARAH JESSICA PARKER: Not a lot of people could have pulled off Parker’s loose, pastel yellow, strapless gown, with silver metallic floral details along the bustline and back. But on her, the Chanel couture piece was stunning. She accessorized perfectly with a stack of bangles and small, floral earrings.
MERYL STREEP: Simply, Streep is both a legend and a fox. Her white Chris March gown was elegant and sophisticated, and the deep v-neck added just the right amount of femininity.
GABOUREY SIDIBE: We couldn’t have said it better than Sidibe herself, when describing her blue, short-sleeved gown adorned with diamond flowers: “If fashion was porn, this dress is the money shot.”
KATE WINSLET: Winslet wins the prize for the best metallic ensemble of the night: Her lovely Yves St. Laurent dress was probably our favorite of the night. Her entire look was perfection.
JENNIFER LOPEZ: In iridescent pink Armani Prive, J-Lo was an exquisite example of how to do the Oscars. Her asymmetrical gown was glamorous, interesting and fit like a glove.
QUEEN LATIFAH: Latifah’s blush pink dress perfectly hugged her curves. Its sole sparkly shoulder strap turned into a diagonal waistband, accentuating her curvy figure. Truly, she was a Cover Girl.
CAREY MULLIGAN: We love Mulligan’s new-ish blonde hair color, because not only did it suit her, but it perfectly complemented the metallic beadwork on her young, fun, black dress. And the cut of her gown showed off her fab shoes. Now, that’s a girl who’s thinking. She could have gone without the ginormous earrings, but they weren’t enough to be a deal breaker.
PENELOPE CRUZ: Does Penelope Cruz ever make a wrong fashion choice? She was stunning in a sweeping burgundy Donna Karan gown. The former Oscar winner was a golden girl on the red carpet.
MO’NIQUE: Mo’Nique left the ceremony a winner, taking home an Oscar and the knowledge she chose the right outfit. Her royal blue ruched dress left her looking like royalty, and we loved the flower in her bun. It wasn’t an accessory you see often at award shows and on her, it worked.
JEERS:
CHARLIZE THERON: Dear Charlize, Cinnabon called, and it wants its pastries back. Also, that red lipstick looked terrible with the two pink colors of your Dior dress. Sincerely, a fan.
FAITH HILL: Between the bustier, lace cut-outs, high lacy slit and messy hair, Hill — whose husband starred in Best Picture nominee The Blind Side looked like she’d just rolled out of the boudoir. Thanks for playing, try again.
DIANE KRUGER:
We probably could have been on board with Kruger’s black and white flapper-style dress had it fit her properly. But it just hung from her tiny frame… that dress was wearing her, not the other way around.
ZOE SALDANA: Whatever words the dictionary uses to define ‘monstrosity’ should simply be replaced with a photo of Saldana’s dress, which combined some sort of pink rhinestone-like top, and five different colors of purple ruffles on the bottom. Horrifying!
SANDRA BULLOCK: From the neck up, Bullock was on top of her game. But on the red carpet, Jay Manuel and Guiliana Rancic were comparing Bullock’s metallic Marchesa dress to Olympics figure skating costumes. Need we say more?
