Benedict Cumberbatch To Work Through ‘Twelve Years a Slave’

Benedict Cumberbatch and his awesome name are about to add yet another awesome line to their already impressive resume. That’s right, the “War Horse” and “Sherlock” thesp has just become the latest addition to the upcoming historical drama “Twelve Years a Slave.” He joins a formidable cast that includes Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Taran Killam, Paul Dano, Adepero Oduye and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Penned by John Ridley (of “Red Tails” fame) and Steve McQueen (who will also direct), the story is based on the true-life events of Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), a free black man who was living in New York in the 1840s when he was duped into taking a job in Washington, D.C. only to be kidnapped and forced into manual labor on a Louisiana plantation. Sounds heavy.

According to Variety, the blue-eyed Cumberbatch will play the plantation owner who buys Northup as a slave, but is eventually won over by his new ward’s engineering skills. That small detail makes us think maybe Cumberbatch’s character isn’t a completely horrible man after all, which makes us that much more excited for this film, since we love us some Cumberbatch.

No word yet on when lensing will begin, but with this cast list posted, we hope it’s sooner rather than later because we can’t wait that long to see Cumberbatch set this brave man free.
