The story takes place in modern-day Canada as art historian Ani (Arsinée Khanjian) is working as a consultant on Ararat, a period movie about the Armenian genocide of 1915 that features an artist on whom she is an expert. Meanwhile, conflicted over his Armenian heritage, Ani's 18-year-old son, Raffi (David Alpay), travels to Turkey to ''find himself'' and learn more about his people.
