A Finnish unit is sent behind enemy lines in Russia in 1942. Their commander Perkola is a good man, but is gradually becoming dehumanized by the war. His fiancee has been killed by Russian partisans, and he gradually comes to take part in the kind of atrocities he always tried to prevent.
