David is about to divorce Giulia and he feels a failure. On the night before the final court hearing he is so upset that he seeks some relief by going to a party where he promptly drinks too much and passes out and has a nightmare.David dreams that his divorce hearing is something out of a detective film, a grotesque and surreal rite that is full of witnesses and he and Giulia must defend themselves. A series of witnesses are called to give evidence against the couple and that is portrayed as a number of flashbacks. Giulia and David try their best to defend their “great love story”. Will David still go through with the divorce when he wakes up?
