Scrutinizes the conflicted nature of Western democracy, freedom of expression and the ways in which one momentous event can influence the lives of so many. Composed of sixteen vignettes from seventeen directors based on imaginative episodes surrounding van Gogh’s death. More than one of the works refer to the ironic fact that the 2004 American presidential election took place on the same day as van Gogh’s assassination. Many take the political to a personal level, pointing out how the effects of racism are often most acutely felt by children. A few of the shorts extend the discussion of tolerance and oppression to consider the implications for Dutch gays and lesbians. Several allude directly to van Gogh’s controversial documentary “Submission” - the 2004 documentary widely considered the catalyst for his murder - in meditations on the impact of Islamic doctrine on women.
