Abandoned by her husband ten years before, schoolteacher Hoda raised her sons Aly and Nagy alone. As they grow older, eldest son Aly leaves Cairo to live in Iraq, while Nagy remains politically active at home. When the Gulf War errupts, the brothers find themselves on opposing sides as Aly joins the Iraqi Army and Nagy enlists with the Egyptian military.
