The story of how harmony and civility in the small village of Plovdiv, a once peaceful eastern Bulgaian town that was home to many religions and nationalities, was destroyed by the advent of communism. Albert is a Jewish boy whose best friend is Araxi, an Armenian girl. The children are inseparable while growing up, but when Communist forces and religious intolerance cause Albert's family to flee to Israel, the two are driven apart for more than forty years. When Albert returns to Plovdiv, he reunites with Araxi. Although she is now married, their passion for each other re-emerges and they begin a love affair.
