Some time in the eighteenth century, the Teacher is called to the house of an ill woman. She is the neice of the great love of his life, Matilde. In flashback, we see his meeting with Matilde as children and then their impossible love a few years later. Mathilde is married to a Frenchman, who is having an affair with the sultry Valeria. Mathilde is innocent and unhappy, and though the Teacher goes to her aid, the outcome of this romantic triangle is tragic.
