Released: June 1st

Studio: MGM

Rating: R

Running Time: 120 Minutes

Why: I love when actors try out new roles, and Mr. Brooks is a great evolution for Kevin Costner in that regard. This movie is also geared towards complexity, when you find yourself pulling for a killer you have to admire what the script has done. Ethan wrote about the phenomenon here.

Would Have Been Rated Higher If: Dane Cook isn’t bad, but his character is written a little weak. It makes the film around nine percent less cool, just enough to make the fourth spot its apex.

Critical Love: A 55% on RT?? 45 on Metacritic?? Those are ridiculous numbers. My only guess is that reviewers were turned off by cheering for a serial killer. That’s honorable, but sorely lacking in imagination.

Box Office: $30m. Off of a production budget of $20m that probably means we won’t get the sequel Costner wanted to do. Hey, rich people, anyone feel like bankrolling this one for me?

DVD Info: N/A. But if we’re lucky we’ll get a special edition. Okay, I admit that’s a pipe dream.
