Who's Up, Who's Down: Apatow, Dre

UP: Judd Apatow
Sometimes the silver medal is a tremendous victory. No one expected writer-director Judd Apatow's latest film, Knocked Up, to take away the box office crown from At World's End anyway. I'm sure everyone at the studio is more than happy to take second with a very solid $29 million dollar open. And check out the 92% fresh (ahem ... Certified Fresh) rating over at RottenTomatoes. Now I read this story and it looks like Apatow has inked a deal to produce a Harold Ramis comedy starring Jack Black called Year One. Ramis, who recently directed a few episodes of a little show called The Office, co-wrote the screenplay with the show's scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. I'm betting Apatow could have gotten a deal to produce a Pauly Shore comedy after Knocked Up's weekend. Hmm. That might be pushing it. But the guy did have a big week. DOWN: MeLast week I wrote a little article on who could possibly replace Matt Damon in the Bourne franchise since he announced he was done with the series. The way I see it, he may be done, but Universal probably isn't. Well, I received an e-mail from a very astute reader named Jeff who was kind enough to point out what a block-head I am. See, one of the actors I suggested to replace Damon was Clive Owen. Everyone wanted him to play Bond so this could be a sort of do-over, you know? Made perfect sense on Planet Dre. Here's reason 5,856 on why it's good I'm the only one on this ill-fated orb. Jeff: You have interesting picks for continuing Jason Bourne's story, but I felt it was necessary to point out to you that Clive Owen was already in The Bourne Identity playing an assassin sent to kill Bourne and ended up being killed by him. So I don't think that would work out very well if he came back to life as Jason Bourne himself. What a twist! Anyway, just trying to help. See how he let me down easy? "What a twist!" Jeff is obviously a very nice guy and I'm quite obviously -- as Film.com staffer Laremy Legel concurs -- an idiot. Thanks Jeff! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Dre writes three times a week for Film.com, covering Movies and DVD with his Floridian flare. E-mail him! Most Popular Stories
