What2Watch: MTV Alumni Go Back To The Beach
The real challenge is staying relevant.
The female cast of 'The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Island' -
MTV
The days when The Real World and its spinoff Road Rules set the tone for MTV were over long ago. Road Rules is apparently dead for good, and The Real World, one of the most influential shows in television history, survives on inertia as much as anything. But the challenges reuniting former cast members of the two shows seem to be as popular as ever, even though the oldest alumni are now on the cusp of middle age, and everyone who participates gets criticized for their inability to move on. The latest Real World/Road Rules Challenge premieres tonight (10 PM), having taken a page from the series that replaced The Real World as he ultimate watercooler reality show: the players are sent to an island, where they will compete in various sand and water based competitions in order to win clues that can lead to the opening of a chest containing $300,000. Of course, the real reason anyone still watches these shows are for the fights, historically the best you'll find in all reality TV, and for the makeup sex that typically follows. It's mind candy at its least nutritious. America's Got Talent (NBC, 8 PM): The second ten from the top 20 perform, including Kaitlyn Maher, aka the four year-old that Charlie keeps saying all those nasty things about; and the reasonably diverting Nuttin' But Strings. As for Tuesday's show, Neal Boyd is working my last nerve. America's Next Top Model (CW, 8 PM): Watching the premiere, I was a bit surprised to see that the transgendered Isis appears to be a real contender and not just someone there as a conversation piece. Tonight, Benny Ninja offers advice on proper posing technique, and arguments continue over who gets discriminated against more. Bones (Fox, 8 PM): The host of a popular reality TV show that deals with cheating spouses is found dead inside an outhouse, and the number of enemies he made makes investigation difficult. Also, Booth is stunned to find Bones is dating two men at once. Greatest American Dog (CBS, 8 PM): The season ends with JD and Galaxy, Travis and Presley, and Laurie and Andrew vying for top dog. The final challenge incorporates elements from previous weeks, although the judges will likely decide the winner based on whatever criteria they wish. I've thought for a month that Travis and Presley were looking like winners, and I might as well stick with them despite my hideous recent prediction record. Inside the NFL (Showtime, 9 PM): The show that had been the longest-running program on any major cable network (dating to 1977) moves from HBO to Showtime for the 2008 season. Cris Collinsworth continues with the series, and he's joined by James "Not That James Brown" Brown and Phil Simms. Project Runway (Bravo, 9 PM): The cattle of the world mooed a sigh of relief with the departure of the leather-centric Stella last week. Tonight, the designers are asked to create clothing based on signs of the Zodiac. So does the person who gets Gemini have to make two of everything? Francisco Costa is the guest judge. 'Til Death (Fox, 9 PM): This sitcom begins its third season having significantly revamped what it's about. Hey, it worked for Happy Days. The marital interplay between Eddie (Brad Garrett) and Joy (Joely Fisher) has been reduced in favor of exploring Eddie's friendship with neighbor Kenny ( J. B. Smoove). Tonight, however, Joy takes center stage as she worries that she got a speeding ticket because men no longer find her attractive. Do Not Disturb (Fox, 9:30 PM): Jerry O'Connell starred in last season's Carpoolers, an amiable enough sitcom that had the bad fortune to have Cavemen as its lead-in. The man whose career highlight will always be sleeping with Rebecca Romijn gives it another shot with this series about staffers at a hotel. The pilot finds the employees reacting to a magazine article that calls them out for their promiscuity. As a onetime hotel employee myself, I have nothing to say except that I am invoking my rights under the Fifth Amendment. Destination Truth (SciFi, 10 PM): Josh goes to Iceland in search of a "worm monster," which is not to be confused with the Devil Worm of last season. Also, a trip to Sumatra attempts to locate a primate that has been rumored about but never captured--and no, I don't mean an honest politician. Man vs. Wild (Discovery, 10 PM): I noted a few weeks ago that some of the locales on this show seem to be getting less exotic, and this episode is an example: Bear is in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Sure, they're the "Badlands," but how bad can they really be if you can see signs for Motel 6 on the horizon? Sons of Anarchy (FX, 10 PM): The club covers its tracks after the warehouse fire; Jax continues to fret over the condition of his son; a new deputy chief of police tries to throw his weight around. One question: how does a guy named Opie get into a motorcycle gang? Most Popular Stories
