What2Watch: Glam God: Stylists Throwing Tantrums Like Stars

All the drama and excitement is behind the scenes of this Vivica A. Fox vehicle.

When I look at the action on the red carpet, it's not uncommon for me to wonder just what the hell some of these stars were thinking with their fashion choices. And when I remember that every one of these disasters was something recommended by a stylist, it occurs to me that styling must be a great line of work. Neither lack of talent nor lack of taste is a barrier to entry. Glam God With Vivica A. Fox, the latest reality show that aims to discover "the next great [fill in the blank]", doesn't quite demystify the profession, if last week's premiere is any indication; if anything, it furthers my already strong prejudice that stylists tend to be overdramatic tools, complete with fake names and accents.

Tonight (VH1, 10 PM), the remaining contestants get a lecture from the ultimate self-appointed style expert, Melissa Rivers, and face the challenge of creating a look for actress Aimee Garcia to use on a red carpet. Aimee has her issues with some of the styles presented to her, but personal tension among the would-be stylists could play a part in the eventual elimination as well. This show could be the next America's Next Top Model, where the competition takes a backseat to the interplay among the various contestants.

Democratic National Convention: The quadrennial shindig ends (10 PM) with Barack Obama giving his acceptance speech at Denver's Invesco Field. Regardless of your politics, it's American history so you'll hate yourself for not watching. When your grandkids ask you about it, will you want to tell them that I'm sure it was exciting, but I missed it because of the very special venereal disease episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians? Hmmmm?

Big Brother 10 (CBS, 8 PM): Dan finally got around to nominating Jerry and Michelle, after one of the more extreme cases of power tripping we've ever seen on this show. But the houseguests are in for a surprise, since a second player will also be bounced from the premises.

Destroyed in Seconds (Discovery, 9 PM): I like shows whose titles get right to the point. Tune in, and you know you're going to see some really cool carnage. Tonight's wreckage includes a building collapse in Manila, and a stealth bomber crashing next door to a picnic.

Principal's Office (TruTV, 9 PM and 9:30 PM): At 9, a frenetic water fight is investigated, and a goody two shoes busted for talking in class worries that his future has been ruined. I think I might be rooting for the principal just this one time. At 9:30, a father is admonished for continually texting his daughter during school hours, and kids are called out for off-color language in their native tongues.

Live From Abbey Road (Sundance, 10 PM): Tonight features Bryan Adams, whose claim to fame is that he had a real exciting summer of '69 when he was nine years old; Ben Harper, whose claim to fame is that he sleeps with Laura Dern; and Justin Currie, whose claim to fame is this here mention in What2Watch. Seriously, who are you, Justin?

Supper Club with Tom Bergeron (Planet Green, 10 PM): One of the guests this week is Heather Thomas, a sex symbol on The Fall Guy 25 years ago who has now reinvented herself as a liberal political activist, of all things. In America, it's never too late to start over. I'll be doing What2Watch next week from the mime school I got admitted to.

Tabatha's Salon Takeover (Bravo, 10 PM): Tabatha shows up at a Burbank spa/salon where things are unacceptably untidy and the staff seems relatively unconcerned. She definitely has the right demeanor for the show, but I'm still not convinced there's really an entertaining concept here.

Top Pop Group (MTV, 10 PM): Another show looking to launch a musical act? There cannot be that much undiscovered talent. Heck, look at the discovered talent these days: it's pretty untalented. Nine pop groups go through the usual wringer, are judged by the usual collection of sort-of-famous folk (Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child among them), and some group gets to split 100K and a grand slam breakfast. Mario Lopez, whose agent must really hate him, is the host.

Reality Bites Back (Comedy Central, 10:30 PM): Amy, Mo, and Theo team up with partners for "The Amazing Disgrace," a race around Los Angeles in a ridiculous van, featuring equally strange challenges. Michael Ian Black needs to get some sort of award for his sendup of reality hosts.

The Cho Show (VH1, 11 PM): Margaret fights back against traditional notions of beauty by holding her own mother/daughter pageant with the help of assistant Selene. I did see the premiere in a daytime rerun a few days ago, so apparently VH1 isn't going to limit the raciness to the wee hours. Here's to 24-hour raunch!
