We Want Die Hard 5
20th Century Fox
Well, John McClane's torn up another adventure and left behind a wake of bodies to amuse the action folks out there. But the question remains: should we be waiting with bated breath for Die Hard 5? Well, this action fan right here says HELL YEAH! I want me more McClane. But really, what's left to do? How can lightning strike yet again? Well, that leads me to one of the flaws and really my one disappointment with Die Hard 4: the slavish adherence to convention in that there was a failure to truly adapt McClane into a post 9/11 world. I mean, are you telling me that after foiling three terrorist plots, that an NYPD police officer, no matter how big a jerk he is, isn't the head of or even a member of some elite New York terror task force? He isn't on some government list as someone to call when they need advising on tactics? Really? This brings me to another plot point of DH4 which let me down. The villain is once again not really a terrorist. He's just after money. Come on. We live in a post 9/11 world. You can't turn on the television, radio or computer without running across the word "terrorist". And we can't, at least once, see what would happen if John McClane faced off against some really dedicated crazies rather than just another batch of criminals? Let's see…how could a New York cop famous for foiling terrorist plots ever run across a real terrorist…in New York City? Hmmm. Puzzler. I know, let's get him to drive to West Virginia to foil Hackers. Come on. So here's my wish for DH5. That's right. You guessed it. Think about it. He's already made friends with the head of the FBI and gotten in good with Homeland Security. What if John McClane were given the job of training a task force to handle operations? Now if you know anything about these kinds of task forces, they are constantly deployed on missions without ever being told whether or not they are a credible threat and without training exercises. Now what would happen if McClane were leading such a mission and it became real? How would this veteran lead a team of green recruits who have never faced a real terror situation in their life? How would McClane deal with people who are not afraid to die? That's what I want to see. I want to see the guy who's been through pretty much every thing face off against the one thing he never has been done over the course of four movies. The real deal. That's the new idea. That's how you make a fifth movie in a great and truly entertaining series. Not to mention, this would also allow Justin Long, Cliff Curtis, and any number of previous film cameos, to come back. So Fox, you guys down? You gonna give us a part five? Please? Pretty please? C.
