The Verdict: Sam Raimi's World of Warcraft, and Is the New Captain Kirk the New Jack Ryan, Too?

Plus see the Toy Story 3 trailer, Los Lobos releases a Disney album, and does Ryan Reynolds in drag really sound all that funny?

Sam Raimi's Warcraft: Drag Me to Azeroth
The man behind three Evil Deads and three Spider-Mans is officially on board the latest ill-conceived cross-media blockbuster-to-be, a live-action adaptation of the massive multiplayer hit World of Warcraft. Saving Private Ryan writer Robert Rodat is writing the script, with Raimi expected to begin shooting after wrapping Spider-Man 4.
Verdict: "Video game adaptation" is actually in the dictionary under "crap" (definition 3), so at first glance this looks like another bad idea from the marketing department. But Raimi has proved he can do a lot with genres that other people wrote off, and Saving Private Ryan's a pretty great movie. And some day a videogame adaptation will be a great movie. But I just don't think this is the one.

Chris Pine Set to Try on Some Big Shoes: Baldwin's, Ford's, and ... Affleck's
Star Trek's Chris Pine is in talks to star in the reboot of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, hoping to fill the role that Alec Baldwin pioneered in The Hunt for Red October, and then Harrison Ford took over for two films before passing it on to Ben Affleck in 2002. With five more Ryan novels in the can, it's only a matter of time before he hits the screen.
Verdict: Pine is the favorite casting rumor du jour (remember when he was going to be Green Lantern? How about Murdock in The A-Team?), so who knows if this will actually go anywhere. But seriously, it all comes down to one thing: Can anyone really ever replace Ben Affleck?

Toy Story 3: The Toddlers Are Coming
With the first two Toy Storys in theaters as a double feature, what better time to release a trailer for Toy Story 3, out June 18, 2010? Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Cliffie from Cheers are all back, with the toys handed down to a preschool and Buzz Lightyear reset to speak Spanish. And dance the flamenco.

Verdict: Except for being reminded of how painfully overrated Randy Newman is, I'm in.

It's a Small Mundo, After All
East L.A.'s iconoclastic guitar-slinging pistoleros are apparently shifting gears with their new CD: Los Lobos Goes Disney, featuring songs from movies and theme park rides like "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "It's a Small World."
Verdict: Oh, boy. What's next, A Very Sex Pistols Christmas? To be fair, as far back as 1988 Los Lobos were on a Disney tribute album singing a tune from The Jungle Book. But still.

Ryan Reynolds in a Dress = Big Bucks?
After a huge bidding war, an unwritten script about a guy who dresses up as a girl to win back his girlfriend -- seriously, that's the big idea -- was bought for "high six figures" this week as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, proving that even in an economic downturn, risk-taking visionaries are wasting money on tired nonsense.
Verdict: Couldn't pretty much anyone have come up with this idea? In fact, didn't Robin Williams and Corey Haim both make this movie in the year 1993 alone? Why, yes. Yes they did.
