Valentine's Day DVD Selections for Weirdo Romantics

Some of us can't relate to Casablanca. We prefer the more dysfunctional romances.

Valentine's Day has arrived and its time for us to cuddle up with our loved ones and watch our favorite romantic DVDs. But what if you aren't among the conventional? Did you think Woody Allen's romance with a teenaged Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan was no biggie? Was the step-brother and step-sister romance in Clueless nothing to stare at? What if your idea of romance is the kind Clarence and Alabama Worley (in True Romance) had?

Well, I have a nice batch of alternatives for the weirdo in you. Enjoy!

Crazy Love
I dare not give up the secrets of this romance because a lot of the joy I found in this superior 2007 documentary derived from watching it all unfold. There's a number of twists and turns in this "crazy love" that are better kept secret. I say discover them on you're own. But I promise/warn you... it's pretty damn bizarre. Seek it out.

Punch-Drunk Love
Consider the following romantic exchange between Adam Sandler's Barry Egan and Emily Watson's Lena Leonard:

Barry: I'm lookin' at your face and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna f***** smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. You're so pretty.
Lena: I want to chew your face, and I want to scoop out your eyes and I want to eat them and chew them and suck on them.
Barry: OK. This is funny. This is nice.

The defense rests.

Harold and Maude
This movie is insane and wonderfully dark and an obvious choice for any strange romantic list. But it makes the list not only because, you know, Harold's a young dude and Maude is, oh, 80 years old; but also because they were virtually polar opposites. Their romance was unlikely in more ways than one. Hal Ashby's film lives.

Lars and the Real Girl
Here's the reason why this one makes the list: Ryan Gosling falls in love with a blow-up doll. What are you still doing here? I told you: Ryan Gosling falls in love with a blow-up doll. That's all I got. Isn't that all I need?

Bride of Chucky
Okay, this is my gooey sentimental pick. See, there's this guy, Chucky, and he was madly in love with this other chick named Tiffany. Well, some really strange and screwed up things happened that kept them apart for a few years. It's not important what. What is important is that when Chucky gets wood, he is actually getting wood. Chucky and Tiffany have a kind of Mickey and Mallory thing going but Katherine Heigl messes everything up in the end.
