Bright colors are big for spring, a statement made clear by Michelle Obama at yesterday's inauguration. Not only is color a sign of optimism about the future, it's also a fun way to drive away the winter blues. So take some inspiration from Bottega Veneta and Proenza Schouler's fall 2008 shows, in addition to the fabulous fashion guide that is Gossip Girl -- bright tights are the perfect accessory to transition your winter wardrobe to spring.
If you suspect your cheery hues will only attract puzzled looks from pedestrians double checking their calendars, try a plum, deep blue or burgundy pair. For the extra-adventurous, pair colored tights with a matching pump and make your legs look longer.
Hats, gloves and scarves are also perfect for pops of color that can liven up a dreary day, but don't get carried over the rainbow. Let one piece get all the attention; too many bright hues will come across as chaotic as they fight to be the center of attention. And keep in mind that pairing too much black with a bright color will only bring back bad '80s memories. Instead, pair a bright color with more neutral shades of the same color.
