Despite the whirlwind of New York Fashion Week, it will still be a while before we see which trends make it past the runway. But after examining the evidence, we've developed a snapshot view of what fashion you can look forward to this fall. And don't worry, if the '80s are back, they are being very sneaky about it.

Black and Bright
Most designers stuck with a neutral color palette, and many shows were almost completely filled with black. However, every once and a while we saw a splash of citron or a pop of hot pink, and we think this might be 2009's nontraditional trend -- the way that "fall florals" were last year. This could be something new and fresh so long as we keep the black and neon combination of the '80s at a distance. Check out the shows of Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, and Oscar de la Renta for this look.

Shine On
An overwhelming amount of designers contrasted their somber tones with metallics and shine. This trend is not for the wilting flowers. It's as bold as the bright colors and instantly chic. See the shows of Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, and Ralph Lauren for more on this.

Supersize Me
For outerwear, it seems to us that the tailored coat is out and the oversized cocoon is in. Most jackets we saw were a rounder silhouette as opposed to the formfitting ones our figures prefer. But the look is not altogether unflattering; for proof check out the shows of DKNY, Proenza Schouler, and Derek Lam.

Asymmetry
It's official, the one-shouldered dress is back in our lives and we're loving it. And it’s just the beginning, given the fact that asymmetrical pieces were all over the runways. Whether it's a little more length on one side, an off-centered slit or collars that don't necessarily match up, off-kilter is the way to go for fall. Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, and Marchesa all sent unbalanced looks down the runway.

Missing Pieces
Minor roles, but substantial enough to note, were played by holes and cut-outs at Fashion Week. Every now and then, we saw a bare shoulder appear or a felted wool dress with holes. There were peek-a-boos that allowed for a surprise of skin to show through and really mixed up collections that might have seemed more tailored and stuffy. Find the holes in the shows of Michael Kors, Charlotte Ronson, and Alexander Wang.

Leg Pizzazz
On the whole, we witnessed a sea of solid colors and a more conservative look in the print department, but that didn't keep extra pizzazz from showing up. Colored tights were back in full force with some added details. We saw blocks of color, animal and psychedelic prints, and even rhinestones added to tights that brought instant cheeriness. If you hesitated on the colored tights trend last year, getting your courage up for this one might take all summer. You can find this fun trend in shows from Zac Posen, Diane von Furstenberg, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Second Skin
Lastly, if you are dying to pull out your leather pants this fall, you've got clearance. Leather was big on the catwalks and took the form of jackets, pants, skirts, and even shorts. Find how to wear your leather by checking out the shows of William Rast, Derek Lam, and Michael Kors.

But that's not all! Keep your eye out for belted fur vests, off-the-shoulder necklines, and belts over evening dresses! And don't worry, your statement necklace is still making headlines for the fall.
