Trailer Parked: The Number 23, Zodiac

Jim Carrey in New Line Cinema's "The Number 23"

Hello, boys and girls, once again it's time we take a peek at everyone's favorite part of going to the movies: coming attractions.

The Number 23
Directed by: Joel Schumacher
Starring: Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen

I just watched the trailer to Jim Carrey's new thriller (yes, thriller), and I have the strongest sense of indifference. This looks like just another garbage thriller, only this time with our favorite rubber-face. Then again, I'm not a big Joel Schumacher fan in general (unless he's doing one of his low-budget penance projects like Tigerland or Phone Booth).

Carrey has always had a hard time winning over the mainstream with his more dramatic work, but I think the curiosity factor in the film's premise might help. This film looks like it gets pretty dark, and there is a possibility that Carrey gets to go Jack Torrance on us. If he does, and the trailer isn't just teasing me here, you can count me among the curious flock ... on DVD.

Zodiac
Directed by: David Fincher
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Adam Goldberg, Dermot Mulroney

This is probably my most anticipated film of 2007. David Fincher is one of the best young talents out there, and from what I've heard, this is an original and totally excellent police procedural about the Zodiac killer. What I like about this trailer is it's kind of relaxed. Do you hear any typical hard-driven trailer music trying to cram suspense or thrills down your throat? I don't. Instead we get Rod Stewart's version of "(I Know) I'm Losing You." It looks very character-driven, actually. This is sort of the antithesis of the Number 23 trailer in some respects, and I've been sold since the project was announced.
