TiVo this! can't-miss movies on TV

MaryAnn Johanson

I scour the skeds so you don't have to, to find the hidden movie gems from all over the channelverse: from the HBO family of channels, Showtime and The Movie Channel, and Turner Classic Movies, which air films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there's nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with really bad movies featuring built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review. Movies frequently air more than once over the course of the month, so if you miss something mentioned here, search listings for additional showings.)

THURSDAY 01.18

Turner Classic Movies 6:00PM: To Catch a Thief. Cat burgling on the Riviera. *purr*

Cinemax 6:15AM: Airplane II: The Sequel. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit goofy sequels.

SciFi 11:00PM: Dog Soldiers. British military dudes versus werewolves. So cool.

FRIDAY 01.19

Turner Classic Movies 8:00PM: The Odd Couple. How long was it that it took Oscar to realize what "F.U." stood for?

HBO2 7:15AM: Wayne's World. I can't hear "Bohemian Rhapsody" without thinking of this flick.

SATURDAY 01.20

Turner Classic Movies Comedy, old-fashioned style.

12:00n: Sleeper. Back to the future.
1:30PM: The Mouse That Roared. Foreign policy as comedy.
3:00PM: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The original Amazing Race.
6:15PM: The Producers. Springtime for Hitler, etc.

HBO2 7:00AM: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. I guess it's Goofy Adolescent Moviethon all mornings this week on HBO2.

SciFi 9:00AM: SS Doomtrooper. So bad it's good ... almost.

SUNDAY 01.21

Turner Classic Movies 8:00PM: Groundhog Day. Don't drive angry.

Turner Classic Movies 10:00PM: Tootsie. Dustin Hoffman in drag ... and Charles Durning thinks he's cute.

Cinemax 7:30AM: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Does anyone else find Gene Wilder disturbingly hot in this? It's me, isn't it?

MONDAY 01.22

OuterMax 3:20AM: Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. It's a crime that the Kids made only one movie.

Showtime 5:55AM: Incident at Loch Ness. Hilarious and witty mockumentary about the search for the famous lake monster.

TUESDAY 01.23

HBO 6:30AM: Fire in the Sky. I never failed to be thoroughly creeped out by the alien-probing scene.

WEDNESDAY 01.24

Turner Classic Movies 5:15PM: The Greatest Show on Earth. Come see how horribly dated and yet still kinda cool 1952's Oscar Best Picture is.

HBOSignature 12:55AM: Firestarter. Little Drew Barrymore can kill you with her brain.

The Movie Channel 8:40AM: My Dinner with Andre. Seriously, they just eat dinner and talk.
