TiVo this! can't-miss movies on TV

I scour the skeds so you don't have to, to find the hidden movie gems from all over the channelverse: from the HBO family of channels, Showtime and The Movie Channel, and Turner Classic Movies, which air films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there's nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with really bad movies featuring built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review. Movies frequently air more than once over the course of the month, so if you miss something mentioned here, search listings for additional showings.)

THURSDAY 12.07

HBO2 5:15PM: Field of Dreams. If you build it, and so on.

Cinemax 11:30AM: Fatal Attraction. Mmmm, boiled bunny ....

Showtime 1:30AM: The Machinist. Christian Bale like you've never seen him before.

SciFi 9:00PM: The Scorpion King. Who'da thunk the Rock could be so charming and so funny?

FRIDAY 12.08

HBO2 1:20AM: Ravenous. Excellent cannibal horror ... if you can stomach that kind of thing.

OuterMax 3:45PM: The Moon and the Son. Last year's Oscar winner for Best Animated Short. Don't miss it.

Showtime 3:45AM: The Woodsman. Kevin Bacon like you've never seen him before.

The Movie Channel 11:15AM: The Brother from Another Planet. And they don't mean metaphorically.

SATURDAY 12.09

Turner Classic Movies 12:00n: Christmas in Connecticut. Barbara Stanwyck goes all Martha Stewart on us ... except she can't cook. Comedy ensues.

HBO2 12:50AM: Falling Down. Michael Douglas has a buzzcat, and man, is he pissed.

HBO2 10:30AM: Ransom. Give Mel Gibson back his son!

The Movie Channel 6:15PM: The Big Lebowski. Apparently it's about bowling.

SciFi 1:00PM: Cabin Fever. First horror flick, and a far better one, from Hostel's Eli Roth.

SUNDAY 12.10

Turner Classic Movies 8:00PM: American Graffiti. Ah, the joys and sorrows of being a teenager ....

HBO2 2:05PM: Superman II. The one with Zod. Awesome.

Showtime 5:00PM: Desperately Seeking Susan. Madonna, before she went all weird.

SciFi All wrapped up in comedy horror.

6:00PM: The Mummy. Almost the return of Indiana Jones.
9:00PM: The Mummy Returns. And again.

MONDAY 12.11

HBO 10:15AM: Everything Is Illuminated. Frodo Baggins goes to Eastern Europe.

Cinemax 11:00AM: Raising Arizona. Kidnapped baby! Jammies with Yodas on 'em! Polish jokes! Funny.

Showtime 1:00AM: Open Water. It'll be weeks before you sleep soundly again.

TUESDAY 12.12

Turner Classic Movies 2:00AM: His Girl Friday. Howard Hawks' screwball masterpiece.

HBO 6:15AM: Crocodile Dundee. That's not a knife ....

HBO2 8:00AM: Enemy Mine. Lou Gosset Jr. and Dennis Quaid have a baby on an alien planet. Cute!

SciFi 8:00AM-4:00PM: Firefly. Marathon of the wonderful and too-short-lived SF Western series.

WEDNESDAY 12.13

Turner Classic Movies 10:00PM: Singin' in the Rain. Sound comes to movies. Drama ensues.

Showtime 5:35AM: Cold Turkey. Thank you for smoking.
