TiVo This! Can't-Miss Movies on TV

MaryAnn Johanson

I scour the skeds so you don't have to, to find the hidden movie gems from all over the channelverse: from the HBO family of channels, Showtime and The Movie Channel, and Turner Classic Movies, which air films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there's nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with really bad movies featuring built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review. Movies frequently air more than once over the course of the month, so if you miss something mentioned here, search listings for additional showings.)

THURSDAY 10.12

TCM It's a Marx Brothers marathon:

9:00PM: A Day at the Races. With Maureen O'Sullivan and Allan Jones.
12:00m: Animal Crackers. Features "Horray for Captain Spaulding."
1:45AM: Monkey Business. On an ocean liner.
3:15AM: Horse Feathers. The brothers go football.
4:30AM: Duck Soup. Maybe their best. Hail, Freedonia!

HBO2 11:30PM: Unleashed. Cool Jet Li flick, a modern martial arts fairy tale.

TMC 1:20AM: Code 46. Michael Winterbottom's surprising SF flick.

FRIDAY 10.13

TCM For Friday the 13th, two of the worst movies ever made:

2:00AM: Plan 9 From Outer Space. Ed Wood's classic of awfulness.
3:30AM: Bride of the Monster. And Wood's runner-up.

Showtime 11:45AM: De-Lovely. Kevin Kline stars in this meta-bio of songster Cole Porter.

OuterMax 12:00m: Marathon Man. Nazis: I hate these guys.

SATURDAY 10.14

TCM 8:00AM: Born Free. The original lion king.

TCM 12:00m: Angels with Dirty Faces. James Cagney mobster classic.

OuterMax 7:00PM: Airplane II: The Sequel. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit goofy movies.

Cinemax 11:50AM: Wayne's World. Public-access TV and the dorks who made it go nerdy-cool.

TMC 2:20AM: Heavenly Creatures. Peter Jackson on homicidal teenaged girls.

TMC 7:00PM: Rottweiler. Nice doggie ... maybe I got a Milk Bone ....

TMC 9:45PM: Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior. Thai kickboxing artist Tony Jaa is the new Jackie Chan.

TUESDAY 10.17

Cinemax 7:45AM: Sixteen Candles. More evidence that John Hughes is the spiritual father of Generation X.
