Thoughts and Reflections on Comic-Con 2008

Where are we going? And where have we been?

These are the questions I ask myself all the time, especially if I'm in a taxi and it seems like he's just driving me around aimlessly to jack up the rate. Man, I hate cabbies.

Anyway, I'm still alive and well at the 2008 Comic-Con. Yesterday's festivities ended with around three straight hours of Kevin Smith, definitely the cure for what ails ya. The man is funny. I think he could have been a stand-up comedian. He at least could have had a failed sitcom on NBC.

Kevin was first a part of E!'s "Visionary Directors" panel, along with Judd Apatow, Zack Snyder, and Frank Miller. The panel was the highlight of my day (until Kevin came out afterwards to discuss Zack and Miri Make a Porno). Each had their own interesting spin on things and I'll be pulling out the best quotes from the evening just as soon as I can dedicate a few hours to the audio. This brings up a good point though: What do I still owe you?

A breakdown of the Twilight roundtables. (I had originally planned to split this work with another guy I know who was there but he went off and did all his own work like a jerk-face. Thanks jerk-face!)

Now then, I was going to do a great photo retrospective on Comic-Con, as I took 200 photos yesterday, but then disaster struck. I did a Photoshop batch resize + image enhance on all the images which caused them to lose all "looking like an actual photo" capabilities. I believe they have been rendered essentially unusable, unless I call them "artsy." Thanks Photoshop! (Note: The error was entirely mine. I'm just lashing out for no reason. It happens.)

But what's still to come??

Fair question. The remaining highlights seem to be Terminator: Salvation

Other fun things: I'm supposed to attend my one and only party tonight. Film.com is sponsoring the VIP lounge at the IESB.Net party at the Hard Rock Cafe so I suppose I should at least make an appearance, right? The only problem is I'm not great with "people" or "social interaction" or "fitting in" or "making friends."

It's an issue.

For instance, there is this writer named Whitney who works for The UsaToday. Her writing is really solid and she seems like a nice person. I run into her all the time at these sort of events because her blog (Pop Candy) is all about movies, comics, music, and entertainment. However, every time we cross paths, instead of engaging in conversation I give a quick waive and then go back to concentrating on whatever book I'm reading. Sigh. I hope The UsaToday doesn't have me killed for my insolence. I've heard they have a gang of roving assassins that handle that sort of work. Ninja ones, too.

Note: The preceding joke was brought to you by the fact that I didn't mention the Ninja Assassins panel with Korean singing and dancing star RAIN. Sorry. I was pretty tired and I felt like the title accurately encompassed the entire theme of the film.

Okay then, that's a ton of topics for one morning. I've decided to include one of my "artsy" photos for your amusement. This is my interpretation of what Judd Apatow would think of the column up to this point. Enjoy!

(Note: the photo will take an hour to batch, so if you clicked on the column early it might not show up and I'm taking a shower. Check back later and it will show up, you'll be disappointed, and I'll be out of the shower.)
