The 2008 MTV Movie Awards are upon us. Come June 1, 2008, MTV will be passing out those little gold popcorn statues to a selection of nominees, and the competition seems pretty stiff. While none of the nominated films are as beautifully crafted as Atonement, MTV has all their popularity bases covered, and that’s what makes this awards show fun. It’s not too serious, just good old fashion entertainment. I mean, come on, a "Best Summer Movie So Far" award would never be on the Oscar category list, but that’s besides the point.

Ultimately, when I went through these nominees, the first thing that came to mind was, it’s boys against girls! In essentially every category there are two typical girl picks, two typical boy picks and one or two toss-ups. For example (and bear with me on this list), consider the "Best Comedic Performance" nominees:

Amy Adams – Enchanted

Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Jonah Hill – Superbad

Seth Rogen – Knocked Up

Adam Sandler – I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

I would venture to say that generally speaking, the girls would choose Amy or Johnny, the boys would choose Jonah or Seth, and Adam would be a toss-up. Check out the nominees for the different categories, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Even "Best Female Performance" gives you some great performances and some baaaaaad performances with pretty faces, which naturally the boys would choose. I don’t mean to generalize. But I’m just saying, I think I’ve unveiled a theme here.

It’s not too surprising to discover that Superbad is all over the nominations. The film received five nominations, including "Best Movie." While I am not afraid to admit I would vote for Transformers in the "Best Movie" category, my gut instinct tells me films similar in style to the likes of Superbad and/or Juno are definitely in the spotlight these days. Juno has a wider demographic on its side (considering the Oscar win), but you never know. I’d say MTV is catering to a pretty young demographic with this gig. I guess the teens will have their day here shortly.

I can’t wait to hear the outcome of the "Best Villain" category. I sort of can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think MTV has targeted the perfect group of Villains. (Although even this category TOTALLY falls into my boys vs. girls theory too … ) Javier Bardem, Johnny Depp, Topher Grace, Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington were totally wicked in their respective films. Kudos to them! I’m waiting with bated breath for this outcome.

What I hope excites an ocean of viewers is Amy Adam's newfound presence in not just the public eye, but in these awards. For her work in Enchanted, Ms. Adams received three nods, all of which pertain directly to her hysterical performance. My fingers are crossed for her!

All in all, the nominees are good this season. Some surprises (I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry) mixed with a little of the obvious (Superbad and Juno) and tossed with some randoms (This Christmas and Rush Hour 3), the 2008 MTV Awards are sure to entertain.
