Thoughts on the 2007 Golden Globe Nominees

They've got nominees, we've got opinions.

Right off the bat I'm wondering how seven films were nominated in the drama category. I guess it's an easier process if a whopping twelve films are nominated for the "best" of something. The big winner today seems to be Atonement which was nominated for seven Golden Globes. Looks like Ian McEwan is in for a very festive next few months.

Charlie Wilson's War gained momentum with five nominations, but I think once the film is seen a bit wider it will falter. I certainly don't look for it to make a splash come Oscar time.

Michael Clayton, Sweeney Todd, and No Country for Old Men each scooped up four nominations, both No Country and Clayton are looking like mortal locks to take a lot of hardware home this awards season. Okay, we've got a ton to get to so let's start breaking the Golden Globe Motion Picture Nominations down!

Keira Knightley in AtonementFilm - Best Drama
American Gangster
Atonement
Eastern Promises
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
The Great Debaters
Michael Clayton

Biggest Stretch:
The Great Debaters is a decent film. But one of the top seven dramas of 2007? Methinks not. I'm also not a huge Michael Clayton fan but I'm smart enough to know when I'm outnumbered.

Biggest Snub:
Reign Over Me, Stardust, and The Kingdom would be among my top personal top seven.

Who I'm Cheering For:
Atonement. I just loved that film.

Winner:
I'm taking No Country for Old Men. I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet though so I reserve the right to change my mind.

Jodie Foster in The Brave OneActress (Drama)
Cate Blanchett - Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie - Away From Her
Jodie Foster - The Brave One
Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley - Atonement

Biggest Stretch:
Looking at this category it seems as though it was a weak year for leading ladies. But Jodie Foster for The Brave One? That's egregiously terrible. Not a good movie, not a top performance. Yikes.

Biggest Snub:
I didn't see the film but I've heard Halle Berry was great in Things We Lost in the Fire. I'd also throw Claire Danes from Stardust out there just for kicks.

Who I'm Cheering For:
Keira all day long.

Projected Winner:
Gotta be Keira. Any other choice is nonsense.

George Clooney in Michael ClaytonActor (Drama)
George Clooney - Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
James McAvoy - Atonement
Viggo Mortenson - Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington - American Gangster

Biggest Stretch:
They did pretty well with this category I think. For me Clooney is a stretch, but I won't be starting a petition or anything.

Biggest Snub:
I don't know how you leave out Josh Brolin for No Country for Old Men. He hasn't gotten nearly enough credit.

Who I'm Cheering For:
I think Denzel actually. He carried that film.

Projected Winner:
Daniel Day-Lewis. Whenever he comes out of his shell to act they try and hook him up. They'll succeed here.
