Surefire DVD Gift Ideas

Sean Connery as James Bond

Okay, last time I made you a list of favorite, holiday-themed movies, and you may have seen my "Lumps of Coal" piece on DVDs to gift your not-so-well-liked. This time, I'm going to highlight some essential DVD gifts in time for Christmas. I'm even going to break down who the gifts are best suited for so there's less confusion.

For The Dad ... James Bond Ultimate Collection - Volume 1:

This is a no-brainer. The beauty of this gift is you pretty much have your Father's Day gift lined up as well (Volume 2). With four volumes in the works, you also have his birthday and next year's holiday gift wrapped up. If you're really bold (see: feeling guilty about something), you can go all out and purchase the entire collection. If you consider doing this, I will consider adopting you. Deal?

For The Mother ... An Inconvenient Truth & Who Killed The Electric Car:

I don't usually buy my mom DVDs because she's just not that kind of person, so I'm a little handicapped here. But I will be picking up two stocking stuffers for her: One about the environment and another about ... the environment. If your mother is more of the conservative type, try this, though you have to promise me you will burn it.

For The Parents (Combo Gift) ... Saturday Night Live - The Complete First Season:

If you want to consolidate your gift-giving, let the baby boomers take a trip down memory lane. As they bust a gut laughing at the antics of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, you can laugh at them for being so darn old. Just kidding, mom and dad!

For The Sister ... Alias: The Complete Series (Seasons 1-5):

You spent years (if you're like me, decades even) torturing your sister. Now it's time to make it all up to her, and nothing says, "I love and respect you" like some girl power.

For The Brother ... King Kong Deluxe Extended Limited Edition Gift Set:

Try saying that puppy five times fast. This set is awesome. I know my brother would like a King Kong bookend. If yours wouldn't, I question your upbringing.

For "The Baby" ... Cars - The Widescreen Edition:

If you've reached the age where you feel obligated to get a gift for the latest baby in the family, or even if it's for your young sibling, why not start the kid on the right foot with a Pixar movie? Infants don't do a lot of DVD watching, but the parents will be grateful in a few years. Oh, and if you get this solid, if minor, effort from Pixar (see my review here), be sure to purchase the Widescreen Edition and not one of the ugly "formatted to fit your screen" creatures. No need to turn the baby into a heathen.

For The Girlfriend ... The Devil Wears Prada:

Guys, be smart about this. If your girlfriend is going to make you watch one of "her" movies, you better make sure it's tolerable and this flick isn't bad at all. Actually, I liked it a good deal. It's a chick flick only on paper.

For The Boyfriend ... Family Guy, Vol. 4 (Season 4: Part 2):

Baby, please get this for me. More importantly, let me know you're getting it so I don't end up picking it up this weekend. And if you don't get me this, check out the weird office guy gift recommendation. Ahem.

For The Guy Who Swears He's Italian, But Ain't ... The Sopranos Season 6, Part 1:

This could be a best friend, your best friend's boyfriend, your boss, your brother ... but everyone knows one of these guys. I'm not the biggest fan of the first half of this season, but it is still one of the best shows on TV.

For The Troubled Teenager ... Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - The Two-Disc Collector's Edition:

This movie has it's detractors, but from what I hear it works better on repeated viewings. Also, it's about 18 hours long, so it will keep the kid off the streets and on the couch like a zombie (where they're safe, damnit).

For The Paranoid Second Cousin ... The Da Vinci Code Special Edition Gift Set:

Everyone has that one guy (or girl) in the family who loves to spout off conspiracy theories. You know, the person who, if you get enough drinks in them, will argue passionately that the Apollo moon landings never happened. Yeah, get this gift set for them.

For The Dorky Cousin ... Star Trek - The Animated Series:

Have a cousin who mysteriously disappears around the time they have those Star Trek conventions? Give them this and when intergalactic war finally breaks out, he or she will totally have your back

For That Really Weird Guy In The Office ... Oldboy - The Three-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition:

If you work in an office, you know who I am talking about, and if you know the type of person I'm talking about, here's some advice: Do not cross us! Just kidding. It's always best to try and be on their good side, though, and Oldboy is such a killer flick, it would be hard to resist this awesome set.

For Your Boss ... Superman Returns - Two-Disc Special Edition:

If your boss is a guy, this is a great way to stroke his ego. If your boss is a girl, hey, better this than The Devil Wears Prada.

For Dre ... Yojimbo & Sanjuro:

That's right. I am not above asking (begging even) for gifts. So if anyone I know is reading this, hook a brother up!

There are so many more types of people to buy gifts for but so little time to go through them all. Nonetheless, this should get you on the right track. I haven't even mentioned other great DVDs like Superman: The Ultimate Collector's Edition; Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist - Season Two; Thundercats - Season 1 & 2; Miami Vice: The Unrated Director's Cut ... the list just keeps on going. And frankly, I don't know that many people. Or at least that's what my wallet's been telling me.
