Well, it's official. They're making a sequel to Superman Returns. And it appears more than just Superman is returning. Bryan Singer, who helmed Superman Returns (and burned any and all bridges he had in returning to his X-Men films) will once again be helming the film titled Superman: The Man of Steel. But the big news is of course the return of Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, despite the erroneous report earlier that he was retiring from film acting.

And frankly, that's exciting news. Lex will be back and for a lot of folks Spacey was the very best part of the first. But there are a lot of other things to be excited about, especially if you weren't the biggest fan of Superman Returns. Here's a couple of things to keep in mind when thinking and talking about the upcoming film.

X-Men (the first film) divided fans in a big way. Some loved seeing their favorite characters brought to life on the big screen. Others, like me, hated everything they got wrong and found that too distracting to like what they didn't. But Singer found his footing and made a far superior second film that satisfied a larger group of people and actually improved the first film. With all of his characters, new actors and situations set up, Singer's second foray into the character of Superman should be similarly entertaining.

Singer has referred to this film as being more like Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. And since that's exactly what X2 was, I feel confident that this is exactly what is going to happen. His version of Khan with Wolverine was pretty awesome. I'm dying to see how he frames it with Supes.

But most importantly, I'm hearing whispers about another villain. While I haven't been able to get anything confirmed, I'm assuming this might be something akin to a mix of Wrath of Khan and Superman 2. The comics are loaded with stories of Luthor manipulating other villains into fighting the man of steel for him, or working in tandem with them to take Superman down. Will we finally get to see what the earlier four films never showed us? Superman fighting one of his trademark villains other than Luthor? It sure sounds like it.

Now that would be exciting. Don't count Superman out if you weren't a fan of the last one. Singer has proven he can make a killer second film. But if you were a fan, then you really didn't need convincing, did you? Regardless, you can color me all sorts of interested.
