The boys didn't get to see each other's views on Spider-Man 3 beforehand, but both of them turned out pretty lukewarm on the movie. You can get Cargill's in-depth opinion on the movie here, and Laremy's here. But only on Film.com do they battle for superiority! Let's get it on!

Did three villains work for ya?

Cargill:
You know, I never thought it would work – but it did. The way the stories were woven together, each and every one of the villains got all the time they needed to be properly fleshed out and present a real, honest menace.

Laremy:
I liked the three villains even though the story itself was lacking. Venom should have been utilized much more, and the plot (again, lacking) goes too far out of its way to make everyone sympathetic.

Does Pirates coming out two weeks later hurt Spidey, or are they different crowds?

Cargill:
This is one of those myths I wish would just die and go away. If you make a great movie, people will come and see it. If you make two great movies, people will come and see them both. The only money Spidey will lose is from the people that don’t see it again because there’s actually something new (as everyone else is getting out of the way and keeping their good movies for later).

Laremy:
Spider-Man 3 is going to have a massive opening weekend which will make it look golden. But I think Pirates does loom in a big way. They are both big-budget, action films that are looking for multiple viewings. Pirates on the heels of Spider-Man's release will cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.

Is Spider-Man 3 better or worse than Superman Returns?

Cargill:
Not nearly as good. Then again, I really loved Superman Returns. Saw it three times in a theater. That said, I’ve already seen Spider-Man 3 as many times (once) as I’m going to on the big screen.

Laremy:
Worse, against all odds. Superman Returns was a good way to ruin a franchise, but it was still executed better than the lackluster Spider-Man 3. Superman went after overwrought symbolism, Spidey tried terrible dialogue. There was more terrible dialogue, thus I'd watch Superman Returns again before I would Spider-Man 3.

Where does this version rank in the series for you?

Cargill:
Dead last. The few flaws in the film really drag it down lower than the other two. It is, however, heads and shoulders above X3, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four – and pretty much every Marvel superhero movie since Spider-Man 2.

Laremy:
The first one was pretty poor, so I'll put it second. Spider-Man 2 was the only one in this franchise even approaching a decent movie.

Do you want to see a fourth? Would you want the same cast back?

Cargill:
Absolutely. As long as they keep making them, I’ll keep watching them. And no, I don’t need the cast. Spider-Man is a character, a mythic hero. He is NOT Tobey Maguire. Just like Batman, Superman, The Hulk, and James Bond, as long as they keep making them, I’ll keep watching. I watch them because they’re movies about Spider-Man, not because I like the cast.

Laremy:
I don't want to see a fourth one in the same vein. How Batman Begins could use a PG-13 rating so effectively and Spider-Man 3 so poorly is beyond me. The web slinger series is nothing more than a syrupy love story, and I'd prefer it just ended. That said, nothing is particularly wrong with the cast, it's the words they are required to say that drags the entire story down.

Yikes! The good news is Spider-Man 3 opens this weekend, so you'll get your own chance to decide.
